How to bring a painting home on the plane

Cabin or hold? Roll or stretcher? Customs at Hurghada? A short note from years of packing pieces for travellers.

How to bring a painting home on the plane

Most paintings I sell leave Hurghada in the hands of a tourist. Over fifteen years I've watched what works and what doesn't.

If the canvas is small enough, take it as carry-on. We wrap it in foam and a hard outer sleeve. Egypt Air, Lufthansa, Aeroflot, Wizz, all fine, you might just need to slide it under the seat.

For anything wider than 90 cm we de-stretch the canvas, roll it in a tube, and you reassemble at home or at a framer. The roll is around 12 cm in diameter, fits any cabin.

Customs at Hurghada is friendly with art. Keep the receipt with you so they see it's a personal purchase.
